Fincar 5 mg tablet containing Finasteride (active ingredient) is mainly used to treat BPH (Benign prostatic hyperplasia or enlarged prostate). It minimizes the prostate size and reduces the risk of urinary retention. Finasteride treats symptoms of an enlarged prostate by decreasing the amount of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in your body. Normally, DHT is responsible for causing your prostate to grow larger. Finasteride causes a significant reduction in DHT, which prevents your prostate from growing larger.
You should not use Fincar 5 mg, if you are a woman or if you are allergic to Finasteride. The medicine is not intended for use by women and could cause potential adverse effects in those who are allergic to Finasteride. The prostate drug is not prescribed for use in children.
There are certain medicines which may interact with Finasteride or Fincar 5 mg and increase or decrease the working of the medicine. Tell your doctor about the medicines that you are taking currently so that he can check for possible drug interaction. Also tell him about the medicines that you are allergic to. Drugs such as singulair, St. john’s wort, ketoconazole, itraconazole, nefazodone, isoniazid, rifabutin, nevirapine, crestor, rifampin, trazodoen, fish oil, cymbalta, and nexium may interact with Finasteride and affect the working of the medicine.
Some of the common side effects of the Fincar 5 mg include swelling in your hands or feet, headache, runny nose, rashes or itching, depression, skin rash, nipple discharge, pain in testicles, breast lumps, impotence, difficulty in breathing or swallowing, swelling or breast tenderness, weakness, and swelling of face or lips. Finasteride may cause loss of sexual desire. This may continue for some time after men stop using the drug.
Your doctor will fix the dose of Fincar after analysing several factors such as the severity of the condition, response to treatment, drug interaction and so on. Usually the dose of Fincar that is prescribed is one tablet per day. It is recommended not to take more or less than the dose prescribed by your doctor as it may result in an adverse effect in the body. Finasteride should be taken as per the instruction of your doctor. The medicine can be taken with or without food too but taking it after food is advisable. The prostate medicine is to be taken for the entire prescribed period and should not be stopped in between as it may lead to adverse effect in the body.
